# TIPP skills: what it means and how it helps with PMS rage

TIPP stands for Temperature, Intense exercise, Paced breathing, and Paired muscle relaxation, four body-based DBT skills used to bring down an intense wave of emotion fast. TIPP wasn't built for PMS or PMDD, though the luteal phase is when this kind of spike is most common. TIPP is a coping tool for the moment, not a treatment on its own.

## At a glance

- TIPP stands for Temperature, Intense exercise, Paced breathing, and Paired muscle relaxation, a set of DBT skills.
- It works on the body first, built for moments when a feeling has already peaked.
- TIPP wasn't designed for PMS or PMDD. The luteal phase is simply when this kind of emotional spike shows up most.
- Broader coping skills training has lowered premenstrual stress scores in small randomized trials.
- TIPP sits alongside treatment like SSRIs or CBT for PMDD, not instead of it.

## What are TIPP skills?

TIPP skills are a set of four fast-acting coping techniques from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), built to bring down an intense wave of emotion within minutes. The name is an acronym, and each letter is a physical action rather than a thought or a conversation.

| Skill | What you do | Why it helps |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Temperature | Hold ice or cold water on your face for about 30 seconds | Sets off a reflex that slows your heart rate |
| Intense exercise | Do jumping jacks or sprint in place for a minute | Burns off the adrenaline from a stress surge |
| Paced breathing | Breathe out longer than you breathe in, for a few minutes | Signals your body it's safe to come down |
| Paired muscle relaxation | Tense a muscle group, then release it, working through your body | Releases physical tension built up with the feeling |

TIPP works on the idea that you can't think your way out of a full-body surge of anger or panic while it's happening. Signs you're at that peak include:

- A racing heart or heat rising in your face

- The urge to yell, slam something, or say words you'll regret

- Crying that comes on fast and hard, with no clear trigger

TIPP is meant for this specific moment, not for working through the feeling afterward.

## How does TIPP relate to PMS and PMDD?

TIPP skills weren't built for PMS or PMDD. They're for anyone whose emotions spike faster than they can think clearly. But the [luteal phase](https://niyora.com/luteal-phase/), the one to two weeks before your period, is exactly when that kind of spike is more likely.

Estrogen and progesterone fall in the days before bleeding, and for some people that drop changes how the brain reacts to normal stress. Anger that goes from zero to a slammed door, or crying that starts before you understand why, can both be part of [PMDD](https://niyora.com/pmdd/) or severe PMS.

Moments where TIPP tends to come up:

- A sudden wave of rage at your partner over something small

- Panic or a racing heart with no clear cause

- Crying that feels bigger than whatever started it

None of these moments are 'just hormones', and whatever you're feeling underneath is still real. TIPP is a way to get your body back under you so you can decide what to do next, instead of acting from the top of the wave.

## What does the research say about coping skills like TIPP?

TIPP itself hasn't been tested in a premenstrual trial. But it belongs to a wider family of coping skills training that has.

A 2025 randomized trial of 60 students with moderate to severe PMS found that five weeks of coping skills training lowered premenstrual stress scores by an average of 20 points compared with no treatment (Medical Journal of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, 2025).

An earlier trial found cognitive-behavioral coping skills training reduced both premenstrual symptoms and the irrational thinking that often goes with them, with the benefit still present nine months later (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1994).

Separate cross-sectional research found that people who scored higher on mindfulness skills and self-compassion had a weaker link between stress and premenstrual symptoms (Psychology and Psychotherapy, 2026). None of this proves TIPP changes PMDD symptoms specifically. It does suggest that body- and skills-based coping, learned and practiced, can lower how much a premenstrual stress response takes over.

## Why does TIPP matter for treatment, and what else should you know?

TIPP skills are a coping tool, not a treatment for PMDD. Guidelines for PMDD point to SSRIs (sometimes taken only in the luteal phase), certain hormonal contraceptives, and CBT, with a doctor deciding what fits. TIPP can sit alongside any of those, as something to use in the ten minutes when a feeling is at its peak.

When to see a doctor

If a pattern of rage, panic or crying shows up most months and takes over a week each time, see a GP or gynecologist and bring two months of daily notes.

## Research on mood swings

117 studies in the library look at mood swings in PMS and PMDD. They were published from 1971 to 2026, and each one has a short summary of what was tested and found.

- [Study, 2026How do women with PMDD process emotions differently in their brains?Women with PMDD show increased activity in emotion-processing brain networks, especially during the luteal phase, and this baseline difference even appears in the follicular phase and relates to symptom severity.Strong study design](https://niyora.com/research/papers/emotion-generation-and-regulation-in-premenstrual-dysphoric-disorder-2026/)
- [Case-control study, 2026Do women with PMS handle emotions differently at different times of the cycle?Yes. ## Questions people ask

Is TIPP skills a treatment for PMDD?

+

No. TIPP skills are a coping tool you use in the moment, not a treatment for PMDD. Guidelines point to SSRIs, some hormonal contraceptives, and CBT for PMDD, with a doctor deciding what fits. TIPP can sit alongside any of those when a feeling is at its peak.

Where do TIPP skills come from?

+

TIPP skills come from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), an approach built around skills for intense emotion. The acronym stands for Temperature, Intense exercise, Paced breathing, and Paired muscle relaxation. None of the four were designed specifically for PMS or PMDD.

How do I use TIPP skills right now?

+

Pick one TIPP skill for where you are: hold cold water on your face, do a minute of jumping jacks, breathe out longer than you breathe in, or tense and release each muscle group. Any one of these can bring down a peak of PMS or PMDD anger within a few minutes.

Does TIPP work for PMS rage specifically?

+

TIPP skills haven't been tested in a PMS or PMDD trial specifically. But broader coping skills training has lowered premenstrual stress in at least one small randomized trial, and TIPP follows the same idea. Calm the body first, then decide what to say or do.
