# What is premenstrual syndrome and how should doctors manage it?

About 95% of women of reproductive age have premenstrual symptoms, but only about 5% have severe, debilitating symptoms. There is no standard way to measure PMS severity, which makes it hard to compare treatments.

 Moderate study design

Literature review of PMS studies

## What they did

This is a literature review summarizing what is known about PMS. It outlines the importance of taking a detailed history, performing physical exams, and doing necessary tests to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms.

## What they found

Premenstrual symptoms occur in 95% of women of reproductive age. Severe, debilitating symptoms occur in about 5% of those women. There is no consensus on how symptom severity should be assessed, leading to the use of many different symptom scales. The cyclical nature of PMS makes it difficult to conduct randomized controlled trials.

## What it means for you

PMS is very common, but severe PMS is relatively rare. The lack of standard measurement tools makes it difficult to know which treatments work best. This limits how well researchers can compare different management approaches.
