# How many women have PMS and what do they know about managing it?

80% of 250 urban women reported PMS symptoms, but only 48% met clinical criteria for diagnosis. Most women did nothing to relieve their symptoms, and over 60% experienced disruption in daily life.

 Early or limited evidence

250 women aged 18 to 30 years in an urban area

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 250 women aged 18 to 30 years in an urban area. Participants filled out questionnaires about PMS symptoms, knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the condition.

## What they found

80% of participants reported PMS but only 48% met ACOG criteria for diagnosis. Most common symptoms were irritability, mood swings, headache, fatigue, and menstrual cramps. 60.4% reported disruption to daily routine. Over 60% did nothing to relieve symptoms. 51.2% thought menstrual leave should be an option at universities, but only 39.2% supported it in the workplace.

## What it means for you

Many urban women report PMS but many do not meet clinical diagnostic criteria. Most do nothing to manage their symptoms. This shows a gap in awareness and management options. The study relied on self-report only, which may overestimate symptom severity.
