# What diet and stress factors are linked to PMS in teenage girls?

High calorie foods, herbal teas, and higher stress levels are linked to PMS and PMDD. Getting adequate sleep, eating regular meals, avoiding fast food, and managing stress may help reduce PMS symptoms.

 Early or limited evidence

300 adolescent girls aged 17-19 at a girls college in Hyderabad, India

## What they did

300 teenage girls aged 17-19 at a girls college in Hyderabad answered questionnaires about their diet, stress level, lifestyle habits, and PMS symptoms during their menstrual cycle.

## What they found

Among the 300 girls, 19.3% had PMDD, 46.3% had moderate to severe PMS, and 34.3% had mild or no PMS. High calorie foods and herbal teas during the PMS period were linked to PMS. Higher stress was linked to both PMS and PMDD. Adequate sleep, less screen time, regular meals, and less fast food were associated with fewer PMS symptoms.

## What it means for you

Diet, stress, and lifestyle habits appear to affect PMS severity in teenage girls. Reducing high calorie foods, managing stress, and maintaining good sleep and regular meal patterns may help. The study was limited to girls at one college in India.
