# Can teaching girls about distraction help them manage PMS better?

Yes, after a teaching program about distraction activities, girls showed higher knowledge scores (50.9% to 82.1%) and greater use (56.07% to 80.73%). However, there was no control group to compare against.

 Early or limited evidence

60 adolescent girls in Rajkot City, India

## What they did

60 adolescent girls at one school in Rajkot City, India received a structured teaching program about using distraction activities (diversional therapy) to manage premenstrual syndrome. Knowledge and practice were measured before and after.

## What they found

Mean knowledge scores increased from 5.09 (50.9%) before teaching to 8.21 (82.1%) after, a gain of 3.12 points. Mean practice scores increased from 5.607 (56.07%) before to 8.073 (80.73%) after, a gain of 2.466 points.

## What it means for you

Teaching adolescent girls about distraction activities can increase how much they know about and actually use these strategies for managing PMS. Main limitations: no control group or randomization, study was at only one school, and the scoring scale basis is unclear.
