# How much do adolescent girls know about premenstrual syndrome?

Among nursing students, none had good knowledge of premenstrual syndrome; 46.7% had poor knowledge and 53.3% had average knowledge. This very small sample from one nursing college cannot tell us whether all adolescent girls have similar knowledge gaps.

 Early or limited evidence

60 nursing college students (mostly aged 18) in Thiruvananthapuram, India

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 60 nursing college students using a structured questionnaire via Google form to assess knowledge of premenstrual syndrome and associations with demographic and lifestyle variables.

## What they found

None of the 60 nursing students had good knowledge of premenstrual syndrome; 46.7% had poor knowledge and 53.3% had average knowledge. 86.7% had previous knowledge of PMS. The only significant association found was between knowledge level and daily water intake. Additional findings: 16.7% had a family history of PMS, 75% exercised daily, 66.7% consumed junk food a few times a month, 58% had menarche between 13-15 years, 55% had body weight between 50-69 kilograms, majority lived in cities (61.3%).

## What it means for you

Even nursing students, who might be expected to have better health knowledge, lack good understanding of premenstrual syndrome. This is a very small study from one nursing college in India, so results may not represent all adolescent girls. The study does not explain why knowledge is poor or what the consequences are.

46.7%

had poor knowledge

53.3%

had average knowledge

86.7%

had previous knowledge
