# Do women experience more aggression and impulsiveness before their period?

Yes. A study of 40 young women found aggression and impulsiveness were significantly higher during the 7 days before menstruation compared to the 7 days after.

 Early or limited evidence

40 women aged 18 to 25

## What they did

40 women aged 18 to 25 were assessed at two times: the 7 days before menstruation and the 7 days after menstruation. Aggression, impulsiveness, and mental health were measured using standardized scales during both phases.

## What they found

Aggression and impulsiveness were significantly higher during the premenstrual phase compared to the postmenstrual phase. Mental health was lower during the premenstrual phase. Aggression and impulsiveness correlated positively with each other and negatively with mental health.

## What it means for you

This shows the menstrual cycle affects aggression, impulsiveness, and mental health. The study is small with a specific age group (18-25) and only compares two fixed week-long periods rather than tracking throughout the entire cycle.
