Survey study, 2022

# Is premenstrual syndrome related to aggression in adolescent girls?

Yes. Aggression tendencies increased as PMS severity increased, and girls who noticed increased anger before their period had higher PMS intensity overall.

 Moderate study design

774 Turkish adolescent girls (university students, mean age 19.05 years)

## What they did

774 Turkish university students answered questions about whether they had premenstrual syndrome, the severity of their symptoms, their menstrual cycle patterns, and their aggression tendencies.

## What they found

58.3% had premenstrual syndrome. PMS intensity was higher in girls with cycle lengths shorter than 28 days, irregular cycles, inadequate knowledge about menstruation, anemia, and those whose anger or aggression increased during the premenstrual period. As PMS intensity increased, aggression tendencies also increased.

## What it means for you

Aggression and anger during the premenstrual period may be part of the broader PMS picture rather than unrelated. However, this study only measured whether these things occur together, not whether one causes the other. The study was limited to university students in Turkey.
