# Is premenstrual syndrome related to stress, obesity, and physical activity in teenage girls?

The study found that stress, obesity, and exercise habits were associated with PMS in teenage girls. However, as an observational study from one school in Indonesia, we cannot know if these factors actually cause PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

124 teenage girls in Indonesia

## What they did

Researchers conducted a cross-sectional study in November and December 2014 at a school in East Lampung, Indonesia. They surveyed 124 teenage girls and assessed their stress levels, weight and height (obesity), exercise habits, and PMS symptoms.

## What they found

31.5% of the teenage girls had PMS. The study found statistical relationships between stress, obesity, and exercise habits with the occurrence of PMS in the girls studied.

## What it means for you

Multiple factors may be related to PMS in teenage girls. However, because this study was observational (just looking at what exists) in only one school in Indonesia, we cannot conclude that these factors actually cause PMS or determine which factors matter most.
