Survey study, 2024

# How severe is PMS in nursing students and what affects it?

Most nursing students (56%) had moderate PMS symptoms, 36% had mild, and 8% had severe. Sleep, when they started menstruating, and daily fast food intake were associated with PMS severity.

 Early or limited evidence

50 nursing students with PMS in Hisar, Haryana

## What they did

A cross-sectional study with 50 nursing students with PMS. They used random lottery selection and measured PMS severity using a standardized scale.

## What they found

56% had moderate symptoms, 36% had mild symptoms, and 8% had severe symptoms. Duration of sleep, age at menarche, and daily fast food intake were significantly associated with PMS severity at p=0.05.

## What it means for you

Most women with PMS have moderate symptoms. Better sleep, when you started your period, and your diet may be connected to how severe your PMS is. The main limits are the small sample, only one nursing school, and inability to prove these factors cause the severity differences.

56%

had moderate PMS symptoms

36%

had mild symptoms

8%

had severe symptoms
