# How common are PMS and PMDD among women in Myanmar?

37.3% of the women met criteria for PMS, and 54.4% of those had PMDD. The study included only women in medicine, so these numbers may not represent all women.

 Early or limited evidence

400 women aged 15-45 from the medical field in Myanmar (students, doctors, nurses)

## What they did

400 women aged 15 to 45 (medical students, doctors, and nurses) completed a questionnaire called COPE for two consecutive menstrual cycles to diagnose PMS and PMDD.

## What they found

Out of 400 women, 149 (37.3%) met criteria for PMS and 251 (62.7%) did not. Among the 149 with PMS, 81 (54.4%) had PMDD. The most common symptoms were poor concentration (88.6%), irritability (87.3%), ache and pain (81.9%), increased appetite (79.2%), and breast swelling (75.8%). Physical symptoms like ache and pain were most common in mild and moderate PMS, while psychological symptoms like poor concentration were most common in PMDD.

## What it means for you

Over one-third of these Myanmar women had PMS, with more than half meeting criteria for severe PMS (PMDD). The most bothersome symptoms were concentration problems and mood changes. However, the study only included women in medical fields, so results may not apply to all women.
