# What signs of premenstrual tension syndrome do female college students experience?

Most female college students experience signs of premenstrual tension syndrome, and they typically manage these symptoms at home without seeing a doctor.

 Early or limited evidence

200 female students at a technical institute in Iraq, mostly ages 18-20

## What they did

Researchers surveyed 200 female students at a technical institute in Iraq from February to May 2015. Students answered questionnaires about their menstrual symptoms. Most students were 18-20 years old and had regular menstrual cycles.

## What they found

Between 75.6% and 86.1% of students reported signs of premenstrual tension syndrome. Most students (80.5%) had regular periods. About half started their periods between ages 12-14. Rather than visiting doctors, students managed their symptoms at home.

## What it means for you

Most college-age women experience premenstrual tension syndrome symptoms and handle them by themselves rather than seeking medical help. The main limit is that this was only a survey without a control group, so we don't know how severe the symptoms are or whether home treatments actually work.
