# Does being a morning or evening person affect premenstrual symptoms?

In university-age women, those who are evening types reported more mood swings and menstrual pain, but this pattern was not clear in younger teens. Sleep timing and cycle regularity showed some connections in certain regions.

 Early or limited evidence

154 university students aged 18-31 and 417 junior high school students aged 12-15 in Japan

## What they did

154 university students (aged 18-31) and 417 junior high school students (aged 12-15) in Japan completed questionnaires about whether they are morning or evening types and about their premenstrual symptoms and menstrual patterns.

## What they found

University students who were evening types reported more frequent mood changes and menstrual pain. In younger students, mood and pain symptoms were not related to morning or evening preference. In some urban areas, students with regular cycles were more morning-typed, and in some suburban areas those with regular cycles went to bed earlier.

## What it means for you

There may be a link between your natural sleep schedule and premenstrual symptoms, but the connection is weak and varies by age and location. More research is needed to understand this relationship.
