Study, 1988

# Does estrogen therapy change hormones that affect fluid retention in women with PMS?

When women take birth control pills, certain hormones increase, but this change does not happen in women taking hormone replacement or women with PMS. These hormones probably do not directly cause PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

Premenopausal women, postmenopausal women, and women with PMS experiencing fluid retention

## What they did

Researchers measured three hormones in different groups of women: those in the early part of their cycle, women on birth control pills, postmenopausal women with and without hormone replacement, and women with PMS who experience fluid retention.

## What they found

In women on birth control pills, two hormones (ANP and plasma renin activity) were higher, while aldosterone stayed the same. In women on hormone replacement or with PMS, the hormone levels showed no differences. The researchers concluded these hormones change with estrogen or progesterone therapy but probably do not directly cause PMS.

## What it means for you

Even though these hormones change with birth control, they may not explain why women get PMS. This suggests something else causes PMS. The study looked at different groups but did not measure if other things changed.
