Case-control study, 2009

# Does exercise reduce premenstrual syndrome in young women?

No. Physically active university students had similar PMS rates as inactive students, with about half experiencing PMS in both groups.

 Moderate study design

152 Turkish university students—76 PE students and 76 non-PE students

## What they did

Researchers compared 76 physical education students to 76 non-PE students at two universities in Turkey. All women completed a questionnaire about premenstrual symptoms.

## What they found

About 53.3% of all students had PMS: 52.6% of PE students and 53.9% of non-PE students. No significant difference was found. Nervousness was more common in PE students with irregular periods.

## What it means for you

In this study, exercise did not appear to reduce PMS, which differs from some other research. The study was done with Turkish university students, so results might differ elsewhere. Physically active women with irregular periods may experience more nervousness.
