Survey study, 2020

# How common is PMS in hospital workers and how does it affect quality of life?

About 51% of hospital workers have PMS, which significantly reduces their quality of life. Women with painful periods and nurses had higher PMS rates than doctors, though this is from one hospital in Turkey.

 Moderate study design

520 reproductive-age women working at a state hospital in Turkey

## What they did

Cross-sectional study at a state hospital in Turkey. All 597 women of reproductive age who worked there were invited, and 520 who met inclusion criteria participated. Women completed questionnaires about demographics, PMS symptoms, symptom impact, and quality of life. Researchers used logistic regression to identify factors linked to higher PMS risk.

## What they found

51% of women had PMS with severity: mild (33%), moderate (16%), severe (2%). Mean PMS symptom score was 111.42±35.88. Women with menstrual pain had 2.85 times higher risk of PMS. Nurses had 3.46 times higher risk than doctors. Women with PMS had significantly lower quality of life scores on all measures and higher symptom impact scores.

## What it means for you

PMS is common in working women and substantially reduces quality of life. Nurses report notably higher rates than doctors, possibly due to shift work or stress. This is from one hospital in Turkey so results may not apply everywhere.
