Case-control study, 2010

# Are women with menstrual migraines more likely to be morning or evening people?

No. This study found no difference in whether women with menstrual migraines or healthy women prefer mornings or evenings.

 Moderate study design

93 women with pure menstrual migraine or menstrually-related migraine and 85 healthy control women, age-matched

## What they did

Recruited 93 women with pure menstrual migraine or menstrually-related migraine and 85 age-matched healthy women. Asked them about their morning versus evening preference using a questionnaire.

## What they found

No differences were found in chronotype distribution between menstrual migraine patients and healthy controls. The study did not confirm previously reported preferences for morning or evening types in migraineurs.

## What it means for you

Even though migraines have a daily rhythm and menstrual migraines follow a cycle, being a morning or evening person does not seem related to menstrual migraines. Earlier research suggesting morning or evening preference in migraineurs was not confirmed by this study.
