# Do teenage girls in cities have more PMS than girls in the countryside?

Yes, PMS was more common and more severe in teenage girls in urban areas compared to rural areas in India. This is one regional study though, so it may not apply everywhere.

 Early or limited evidence

217 girls aged 12-18 in urban and rural areas of Tripura, India

## What they did

Cross-sectional survey of 217 girls aged 12-18 in Tripura, India (both urban and rural schools). Girls answered questionnaires based on medical criteria for PMS about their physical and emotional symptoms.

## What they found

PMS was diagnosed in 60.8% of the 217 girls. Urban girls had higher rates of stomach pain and muscle cramps (100%) compared to rural girls (84.8%). Fatigue was more common in urban girls (92.4%) than rural girls (65.2%).

## What it means for you

More teenage girls in urban areas of India report severe PMS symptoms than those in rural areas. The reason is unclear and could relate to stress, diet, lifestyle, or other factors. These findings are specific to this part of India.
