Survey study, 2024

# Do women with PMS have different hormone levels and thinking ability than women without PMS?

Women with PMS showed lower thinking skills and general health compared to women without PMS, but both groups had identical progesterone hormone levels. This suggests PMS affects brain function and health in ways not fully explained by hormone differences.

 Moderate study design

200 women with and without PMS visiting a health center in Zanjan, Iran in 2023

## What they did

Comparative study of 200 women (half with PMS, half without) in Zanjan, Iran in 2023. Women had blood tests to measure hormone levels, completed a test of thinking and decision-making ability (Wisconsin Card Sorting Test), and answered questionnaires about general health and PMS symptoms.

## What they found

Women with PMS had lower scores on thinking ability compared to women without PMS. General health was lower in the PMS group. Both groups had the same level of progesterone hormone secretion, with no difference found.

## What it means for you

PMS may affect how the brain works and overall health, but not through progesterone alone. This suggests other mechanisms may be involved. This is a single-location study, and researchers couldn't measure all possible hormones involved in PMS.
