Survey study, 2017

# Does cognitive-behavioral therapy or cognitive hypnosis help reduce depression in students with PMS?

Both therapies reduced depression in students with PMS. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and cognitive hypnosis worked about equally well.

 Early or limited evidence

30 female students with PMS in Rasht City, Iran

## What they did

Researchers worked with 30 female students in Rasht City, Iran who had PMS. They divided students into three groups: one group received 8 weeks of group cognitive-behavioral therapy, one group received 8 weeks of group cognitive hypnosis, and one group received no treatment. They measured depression before and after using standard questionnaires.

## What they found

Both the cognitive-behavioral therapy group and the cognitive hypnosis group showed a clear reduction in depression compared to the control group. The two therapy types worked about equally well at reducing depression.

## What it means for you

Psychological treatments may help reduce depression linked to PMS. The study is small (30 people total) and only looked at one group of students in one city. It did not compare these treatments to medication. The control group received no treatment at all, so we cannot tell if improvement came from the specific therapy or from attention and expectation.
