Randomised trial, 2013

# Does information about relaxation help adolescents decide to use it for PMS?

Yes. Both detailed and general information about relaxation helped adolescents decide to try it more than no information. Detailed information was slightly more effective, though the difference was not statistically significant.

 Moderate study design

411 high school students with PMS who were undecided about trying relaxation

## What they did

Researchers identified 411 high school students with PMS who were undecided about trying relaxation. Students were randomly assigned to receive either detailed information about relaxation (n=98), general information about relaxation (n=150), or no information (n=163, control). Follow-up assessed whether they moved toward using relaxation.

## What they found

Compared to the control group, both the detailed information group and general information group were significantly more likely to move toward adopting relaxation (P<0.001). Students who received detailed information progressed slightly more than those with general information, but this difference was not statistically significant (P=0.33).

## What it means for you

For adolescents with PMS who are unsure about trying relaxation, providing specific information can help them decide to use it. The study only included students who were already considering relaxation, so results may not apply to all adolescents with PMS.
