# How common is PMS in adolescents and what factors relate to it?

PMS was detected in 73.3% of adolescents aged 12-18. Older age and later age at menarche were associated with higher PMS scores.

 Early or limited evidence

311 adolescents aged 12-18 in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey

## What they did

Cross-sectional descriptive study of 311 adolescents aged 12-18 in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey conducted between January and May 2023. They measured PMS using the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale.

## What they found

PMS was detected in 73.3% of adolescents. There was a significant positive relationship between PMS score and age (r=0.121, p=0.033). There was a significant positive relationship between age at menarche and total PMS score and subscales including depressive affect, anxiety fatigue, depressive thoughts, pain, and appetite change (p<0.05).

## What it means for you

Most adolescents in this Turkish sample reported PMS symptoms. Girls who started their periods later tended to have worse PMS symptoms. However, this is a cross-sectional study from one country, so results may not apply everywhere. The findings suggest early intervention programs should begin before girls reach menarche.
