# Does eating food with isoflavones reduce premenstrual syndrome?

In this small study, eating food with 68mg of isoflavones per day reduced PMS complaints. However, there was no control group, so we cannot be sure the food alone caused the improvement.

 Early or limited evidence

16 tenth-grade adolescent girls in Indonesia

## What they did

A study of 16 tenth-grade girls. Researchers measured their PMS symptoms before and after eating food containing isoflavones (68mg per day) using a standard questionnaire to score complaint severity.

## What they found

After eating isoflavone-containing food, more girls moved from moderate to light complaints. The average symptom score decreased from 26.18 to 21.12 (p = 0.011).

## What it means for you

Adding isoflavone-rich foods might help with PMS. The main limitations are that this was very small with no control group, and we don't know how long girls needed to eat the food. Other factors like natural variation over time could explain the improvement.
