# Does polarized light therapy reduce low back pain in women with PMS?

Yes. Women with PMS who received polarized light therapy in addition to standard treatment had significantly greater reductions in back pain and improvement in function than those receiving standard treatment alone.

 Moderate study design

60 women aged 18 to 35 with PMS and low back pain, BMI under 30

## What they did

Randomly assigned 60 women aged 18 to 35 with PMS and low back pain to standard treatment alone or standard treatment plus polarized light therapy (15 minutes, 2.4 J/cm squared, three times weekly for 8 weeks). Measured pain intensity, pain sensitivity, and disability before and after.

## What they found

Both groups improved on all measures after treatment. The polarized light therapy group had significantly greater improvements in pain intensity, disability, and pain pressure threshold compared to the control group.

## What it means for you

Adding polarized light therapy to standard treatment may help reduce PMS-related low back pain and disability better than standard treatment alone. However, this study was small and focused only on low back pain as a single symptom, not overall PMS.
