# How do leptin levels and combined medical treatments affect premenstrual symptoms in obese women?

Obese women with premenstrual tension syndrome had higher leptin levels and nervousness than healthy women. Combined treatments including diet, exercise, and medication significantly reduced both leptin levels and nervousness.

 Moderate study design

60 obese women with premenstrual tension syndrome (aged 18-48) compared to healthy controls

## What they did

60 obese women with PTS (aged 18-48) were compared to healthy controls (30 per group). Serum leptin and nervousness were measured before and after treatment. The treatment combined calorie-restricted diet, daily 30-minute walking, metformin, amiloride/hydrochlorothiazide, and vitamins.

## What they found

Obese women with PTS had significantly higher serum leptin than controls (p<0.05). Nervousness ratings were significantly higher in women with PTS (p<0.001). Combined treatments significantly reduced leptin levels (p<0.01) and nervousness ratings (p<0.001), with leptin reduction correlating with nervousness improvement.

## What it means for you

Higher leptin levels may be associated with premenstrual symptoms in obese women, and a combination approach of diet, exercise, and medication may help manage both. The limitation is that all participants were obese, so findings may not apply to women of other body types.
