Case-control study, 2016

# Do women with PMS have more problems during pregnancy and labor?

Yes. Women with PMS had more pregnancies and labors overall, and those with the edematous form (swelling) had much higher rates of late pregnancy complications.

 Early or limited evidence

200 women with PMS and 50 without PMS of reproductive age

## What they did

Compared 200 women with PMS to 50 women without PMS by reviewing their pregnancy and labor histories.

## What they found

Women with PMS had 1.59 times more pregnancies and 1.70 times more labors than controls. Edematous-form PMS was associated with more pregnancy complications. Late gestosis (high blood pressure in pregnancy) occurred 4.55 times more often in women with edematous PMS (47.82% versus 10.52%). These women also had higher rates of caesarean section, forceps delivery, heavy bleeding, and preterm labor.

## What it means for you

Women with PMS, especially with swelling symptoms, may need extra monitoring during pregnancy. This observational study found associations but does not prove PMS causes these complications.
