Survey study, 2025

# Do teenage girls understand PMS and how do they manage symptoms?

Most teenage girls understood PMS well. They managed symptoms mainly with rest, healthy food, and warm compresses rather than medication or exercise.

 Early or limited evidence

60 teenage girls at a school in Indonesia

## What they did

Researchers surveyed 60 teenage girls at a school in Indonesia using questionnaires about their PMS knowledge and how they manage symptoms.

## What they found

56.7% had good understanding of PMS, 33.3% had adequate understanding, and 10% had poor understanding. For managing symptoms: 78.3% chose rest, 73.3% ate healthy food, 63.3% used warm compresses, 41.7% did light exercise, and 20% took pain medication.

## What it means for you

Teenage girls generally understand PMS well and use non-medication approaches. However, few use exercise for symptom management. More education is needed to encourage active symptom management like exercise.
