# Do hormonal changes in obese women cause worse PMS, and can medications help?

Yes, obese women with PMS had significantly higher stress hormone levels than healthy women, and a combination treatment of medications, diet, and exercise significantly reduced these hormones and PMS symptoms.

 Moderate study design

60 obese women with premenstrual tension syndrome in Iran (ages 18-48) and age-matched healthy controls

## What they did

Randomized controlled trial with 60 obese women with premenstrual tension syndrome divided into age groups (18-39 and 40-48 years), compared to age-matched healthy controls. Blood levels of stress hormones (adrenaline and noradrenaline) were measured. The treatment group received combined therapy including Metformin, a diuretic, calorie-restricted diet, walking, and vitamin supplementation.

## What they found

Obese women with PMS had significantly higher serum adrenaline and noradrenaline levels compared to the control group. Combined treatment significantly reduced these stress hormones and improved symptoms of headache, backache, and stomach bloating.

## What it means for you

Obesity may worsen PMS by raising stress hormone levels, and combination treatment with medication, diet, and exercise can help normalize these hormones and reduce symptoms. This study only included obese women, so findings may not apply to non-obese women with PMS.
