Survey study, 2020

# Does eating enough of certain nutrients help prevent PMS in high school students?

Yes. Higher intake of fat, carbohydrates, fiber and vitamin B6 were all linked to lower PMS risk, with vitamin B6 being the most protective.

 Early or limited evidence

High school students in Indonesia studied in 2017

## What they did

Researchers studied high school students in 2017. They collected two 24-hour food records from each student and used a questionnaire to assess PMS symptoms, then looked for connections between specific nutrients and PMS.

## What they found

Four nutrients were linked to lower PMS risk: fat, carbohydrates, fiber and vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 was the strongest protective factor. All four nutrients together reduced the risk of PMS.

## What it means for you

Getting enough fat, carbohydrates, fiber and especially vitamin B6 in your diet may help reduce PMS risk. The study looked only at high school students, so results may not apply to older women.
