Survey study, 2025

# Does healthy eating reduce PMS symptoms in teenage girls?

Yes. Girls with healthy eating were much more likely to have mild symptoms, while girls with unhealthy eating were more likely to have moderate symptoms.

 Early or limited evidence

108 teenage girls in a boarding school in Indonesia

## What they did

Cross-sectional study with 108 teenage girls in a boarding school. Girls reported their eating patterns and PMS symptoms using questionnaires. Researchers used statistical tests to look for a connection between diet and PMS severity.

## What they found

Of girls with healthy eating habits, 69.7% (23 girls) had mild PMS. Of girls with unhealthy eating habits, 50.7% (38 girls) had moderate PMS. There was a clear connection between eating pattern and PMS severity.

## What it means for you

A healthy diet appears to be linked to milder PMS symptoms. Girls eating unhealthy food were more likely to have moderate rather than mild symptoms. The study was limited to one boarding school in Indonesia, so results may not apply to other groups or places.
