Survey study, 2018

# Does a girl's weight and magnesium intake affect whether she gets PMS?

Yes. Girls who were overweight and girls who did not eat enough magnesium were more likely to have PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

99 female high school students in Surabaya, Indonesia

## What they did

Researchers measured the height and weight of 99 female high school students and asked them to record everything they ate for two days to measure magnesium intake. They also asked about PMS symptoms using a questionnaire.

## What they found

Being overweight was linked to having PMS. Low magnesium intake was linked to having PMS. The researchers recommended girls eat more magnesium-rich foods like spinach, apples, and sweet potatoes.

## What it means for you

A girl's weight and how much magnesium she eats may affect whether she gets PMS. Eating more magnesium-rich foods and keeping weight stable might help. The main limits are that this was a study where researchers only observed what happened (we cannot tell if weight and magnesium cause PMS or just go along with it), and it was in one school in Indonesia.
