# Is stress related to PMS symptoms?

Yes, higher stress levels were clearly related to PMS symptoms in the students studied. This suggests stress may worsen PMS symptoms.

 Early or limited evidence

82 female university students in a management program in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

## What they did

Researchers surveyed 82 female university students in a management program. They asked students about their stress levels and PMS symptoms using two questionnaires.

## What they found

30.5% of students (25 people) had very heavy stress levels. 36.6% of students (30 people) had mild PMS symptoms. There was a clear relationship between stress level and PMS symptoms.

## What it means for you

Higher stress appears linked to PMS symptoms in this group. However, the study measured stress and symptoms at one point in time, so we cannot say whether stress causes PMS or whether PMS causes stress. The study was also limited to one university program in one Indonesian city, limiting how broadly these findings apply.
