Survey study, 1999

# Do nursing interventions help relieve PMS symptoms?

Yes. Educational nursing interventions proved effective in relieving PMS and improving students' practices during the premenstrual period.

 Early or limited evidence

200 nursing students: 100 from each of two schools in Alexandria and Tanta, Egypt.

## What they did

Nursing students at two schools in Alexandria and Tanta were surveyed about PMS symptoms and how they managed them. Then 100 students from each school were divided into experimental and control groups: one received educational nursing interventions, one did not. Researchers used a questionnaire and evaluation tool to measure relief of symptoms.

## What they found

Most students in both cities had various physical, psychological, and behavioral PMS symptoms. Educational nursing interventions proved most effective in relieving PMS and improving students' practices during the premenstrual period.

## What it means for you

Teaching students about PMS appeared to help them manage symptoms. The main limits are that the sample is small (200 students from 2 schools in one country) and it's not clear exactly what the interventions included.
