# What makes PMS worse in nursing students?

Higher stress and more painful periods were linked to worse premenstrual syndrome, and together these explained about a fifth of the difference between students.

 Early or limited evidence

159 nursing students at three colleges in South Korea

## What they did

Researchers surveyed 159 nursing students at three colleges in South Korea using questionnaires, then analyzed the data with statistics to see what was linked to PMS severity.

## What they found

Stress and attitude toward menstruation were both linked to PMS. Stress (beta=.36, p<.001) and painful periods (dysmenorrhea) (beta=.22, p=.003) were the main factors affecting PMS, together explaining 19.4% of the differences seen between students.

## What it means for you

Programs to reduce stress and period pain might help manage PMS in nursing students, but this study only looked at associations in one group at one time, so it cannot prove that stress or pain causes worse PMS, and the findings may not apply beyond this group.
