# Did COVID-19 stress make PMS worse in nursing students?

During the pandemic, most nursing students had PMS, and some reported that PMS duration and severity got worse. The pandemic appeared to cause negative changes in menstruation and PMS symptoms.

 Early or limited evidence

131 nursing students during COVID-19 pandemic in 2021

## What they did

Cross-sectional survey of 131 nursing students during April 10-20, 2021. Students answered questions about their menstrual patterns and PMS symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic.

## What they found

77.9% of students had PMS. During the pandemic, 15.3% reported that PMS duration increased and 22.0% reported that PMS severity increased. The pandemic period coincided with negative changes in menstruation and PMS complaints.

## What it means for you

Stress from the pandemic may have worsened PMS for some nursing students. This is a small study of students in one country during one specific time, so findings may not apply to other groups or situations. We cannot prove the pandemic caused the changes, only that they happened at the same time.
