# Is poor nutrition linked to worse PMS symptoms in young women?

Yes. Women with unbalanced nutrition were significantly more likely to have moderate to severe PMS, especially those lacking protein, calcium, and vitamin B6.

 Early or limited evidence

80 university students aged 18-24 in Indonesia

## What they did

Cross-sectional study with 80 university students aged 18-24. Researchers measured PMS symptoms using a questionnaire and measured nutrition intake using a food frequency questionnaire. They used statistical tests to look for a connection.

## What they found

65% of women had moderate to severe PMS. 60% had unbalanced nutrition. The main nutrient gaps were protein, calcium, and vitamin B6. There was a clear connection between unbalanced nutrition and PMS symptoms.

## What it means for you

Nutrition appears to be linked to PMS severity. Women lacking enough protein, calcium, and vitamin B6 were more likely to have worse symptoms. The study was limited to young women aged 18-24 at one university in Indonesia, so results may not apply to other groups or ages.

Original title Kejadian Sindrom Pramenstruasi dengan Gejala yang Dialami Wanita sebelum Memasuki Masa Menstruasi (Premenstrual Syndrome) terhadap Asupan Gizi Authors Nurhidaya Journal Journal of Innovative and Creativity (Joecy) Year 2025 Study design Survey study What was tested None - observational study Open access Yes Read the paper [doi.org/10.31004/joecy.v5i2.3325](https://doi.org/10.31004/joecy.v5i2.3325) Original abstract
