# What factors most affect how teenage girls cope with PMS?

Among six factors studied, family support had the biggest statistical link to PMS behavior in teenage girls, but this is one cross-sectional study, so it cannot prove that support actually changes symptoms.

 Early or limited evidence

110 teenage girls at one high school in Bengkulu, Indonesia

## What they did

Cross-sectional survey of 110 teenage girls at a high school (SMAN 10) in Bengkulu, Indonesia, in 2019. Researchers looked at how six factors, health workers, peers, teachers, knowledge, family support, and physical activity, related to PMS behavior, using a statistical method called smart PLS 2.0.

## What they found

Family support showed the strongest link (21.89%), followed by peer support (20.20%), health workers (18.62%), teachers (12.25%), knowledge (5.58%), and physical activity (5.58%). Together these factors had a direct effect of 84.12% and an indirect effect of 1.01%, for a total effect of 85.13% on PMS behavior. The researchers concluded family support was the most influential factor.

## What it means for you

Having family support may help teenage girls manage PMS better than other factors tested. But this is a single cross-sectional study in one Indonesian school with no control group, so it shows a statistical link, not proof that more family support actually reduces PMS symptoms.
