Case-control study, 2024

# Does weight loss surgery improve PMS symptoms in obese women?

Yes. Women with obesity and moderate-to-severe PMS who had sleeve gastrectomy surgery showed PMS improvement (57.35%) compared to women without surgery (25.40%) at 3 months follow-up.

 Moderate study design

131 obese women in China (BMI at least 27.5) with moderate-to-severe PMS

## What they did

Case-control study of 131 obese women in China with BMI at least 27.5 and moderate-to-severe PMS from 2018-2022. 68 chose laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery and 63 did not. PMS severity was measured at baseline and 3 months.

## What they found

57.35% (39 women) in the surgery group had PMS improvement compared to 25.40% (16 women) in the control group. Surgery was identified as an independent factor linked to PMS improvement. Changes in BMI, testosterone, and estradiol levels were associated with symptom improvement.

## What it means for you

Weight loss surgery may help some women with PMS, possibly through hormonal changes. However, some control participants also improved without surgery. Follow-up was only 3 months so longer-term effects are unknown. This is major surgery with risks.
