# Does connective tissue manipulation help dysmenorrhea pain and other symptoms?

Yes, connective tissue manipulation reduced pain and fatigue significantly. Longer treatment appeared to have longer-lasting benefits through 12 months.

 Early or limited evidence

35 women with dysmenorrhea (18 in group 1, 17 in group 2)

## What they did

Two groups of women with dysmenorrhea received connective tissue manipulation. Group 1 (n=18) received it between 2 menstrual cycles and group 2 (n=17) received it between 3 menstrual cycles. Both groups were followed for 12 months.

## What they found

Both groups had significant decreases in pain and fatigue after treatment and at 3-month and 6-month follow-up (p=0.001). Group 2 maintained improvement at 12-month follow-up (p=0.0001). No significant improvement in sleep quality. The two groups did not differ from each other.

## What it means for you

Connective tissue manipulation may help dysmenorrhea pain and fatigue, possibly with longer-lasting effects from longer treatment. However, the sample is very small and there was no untreated control group for comparison.
