# What medications do young women use for period cramps?

Young women in Taiwan use both Western medicines like Panadol and traditional Chinese medicines like Si-Wu-Tang. Women with more symptoms were more likely to use any type of medication.

 Moderate study design

2758 female nursing students in Southern Taiwan

## What they did

Researchers gave a survey to 2758 female nursing students in Southern Taiwan and asked them about medication use for period cramps and related symptoms.

## What they found

Panadol was the most commonly used Western medicine and Si-Wu-Tang was the most commonly used traditional Chinese medicine. Women who reported more premenstrual and menstrual symptoms were more likely to use Western medicines or traditional Chinese medicines. Western medicines were used for a broader range of symptoms than traditional medicines.

## What it means for you

Young women in Taiwan choose medications based on their symptom severity, and both Western and traditional medicines are widely used. The main limit is that the study only included nursing students in southern Taiwan, so it may not represent all Taiwanese women.
