# Can a short, simple hormone test spot women whose mood is especially sensitive to hormone changes?

A quick 7-day hormone test gave similar results to a much longer 4-month test in identifying hormone-sensitive women, but this was a very small pilot study, so it's an early, promising sign rather than a settled answer.

 Early or limited evidence

14 regularly cycling women who had previously taken part in a hormone challenge study; 9 of them completed the new 7-day test

## What they did

Researchers invited women who had earlier done a 4-month hormone challenge (where estrogen and progesterone were given during hormone suppression) to try two simpler, less invasive methods: a 7-day double-blind hormone challenge (estrogen and progesterone for 7 days versus placebo for 7 days, n=9) and prospective daily mood tracking across cycles using a standard PMS/PMDD scoring tool (n=14).

## What they found

The hormone-sensitive (HS+) classifications from the original 4-month test were successfully matched by the new 7-day test (p=.028). Being hormone-sensitive was linked to menstrually-related mood disorder at a borderline, trend level (p=.066), not a fully statistically significant level.

## What it means for you

This suggests a shorter, easier hormone test might one day help identify women whose mood is particularly reactive to hormone shifts, which could help PMDD research move faster. But the study only included a handful of women, was a feasibility check, and needs repeating in larger groups before it means anything for everyday care.
