# What factors predict which teenage girls will have PMS?

Stress and a marker in the urine were the strongest predictors of PMS in teenage girls. Diet factors like fat, calcium, and zinc were also related to PMS risk.

 Moderate study design

90 high school students in Makassar, Indonesia

## What they did

Researchers studied 90 high school students in Indonesia, measuring their diet over 24 hours, assessing their stress and mood, and measuring a marker in their urine called 8-OHdG.

## What they found

About 29 percent of the girls had PMS. Girls with higher stress, depression, and higher levels of the urine marker were more likely to have PMS. Diet factors including fat, calcium, and zinc were also associated with PMS. Stress and the urine marker were the strongest predictors.

## What it means for you

The findings suggest that stress, diet quality, and a marker related to cellular health are connected to PMS in teenage girls. However, this was a one-time measurement study, so we cannot say whether these factors actually cause PMS or are just associated with it.
