# How common is PMS among teenage girls, and what might cause it?

PMS is reported to affect a large share of teenage girls. This abstract is background information for a planned health education session, not a new study, so it does not test whether the education actually reduces PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

General background on teenage girls and Indonesian women, from ACOG (2012) and WHO data; no new group was studied.

## What they did

This paper presents background information to support a health education activity about PMS for teenage girls in the service area of a midwife (Bidan Veronica). The abstract summarizes definitions and existing statistics rather than describing a new sample, method, or test of the education's effect.

## What they found

Citing the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (2012), about 65,7% of teenage girls experience PMS symptoms. Citing the World Health Organization, PMS symptoms are experienced by 23% of Indonesian women. Around 200 symptoms have been linked to PMS, with irritability and dysphoria (sadness) most common. A possible cause mentioned is an imbalance between estrogen and progesterone, which may lead to fluid and sodium retention, weight gain, and sometimes swelling.

## What it means for you

This tells us PMS is common among teenage girls and Indonesian women generally, and gives one possible hormonal explanation, but it is not a study of a specific group of patients and does not report any test results from the health education program itself.
