# Does having more knowledge about PMS affect whether women get PMS symptoms?

No. The study found no significant relationship between knowledge level about PMS and whether women actually experienced symptoms.

 Early or limited evidence

Female university students in Indonesia

## What they did

Cross-sectional survey of female university students in Indonesia. Students completed questionnaires about their knowledge of PMS, menstrual cycle regularity, diet, exercise, nutrition, and body weight.

## What they found

No significant connection was found between knowledge and PMS symptoms. The researchers identified several factors that may contribute to PMS: irregular menstrual cycles, lower progesterone levels, higher estrogen levels, stress, early first menstruation, and poor nutrition.

## What it means for you

Simply knowing more about PMS does not appear to prevent or reduce symptoms. The study was limited because it was done at only one university in Indonesia and only looked at relationships rather than following women over time.
