PMDD is a serious mood disorder linked to the menstrual cycle that requires care from both gynecology and psychiatry specialists working together.

 Early or limited evidence

General review of PMDD across medical specialties

## What they did

A narrative review of scientific literature on PMDD covering its epidemiology, causes, clinical presentation, diagnosis, related conditions, psychiatric complications, and treatment options.

## What they found

PMDD involves affective, behavioral, cognitive, and somatic symptoms that significantly impair daily functioning. It occurs at the intersection of gynecological and psychiatric conditions. The condition is linked to ovulation, menstrual cyclicity, and ovarian hormone fluctuations.

## What it means for you

PMDD is complex and needs attention from both gynecologists and psychiatrists. People with PMDD benefit from coordinated care between specialties. This is a narrative review without systematic methods, so it may not evaluate all evidence with equal rigor.
