# How common is PMDD in Indian medical students and what lifestyle factors affect it?

PMDD was found in 37% of medical students and was linked to poor sleep, low physical activity, and high caffeine intake.

 Early or limited evidence

100 medical students in an Indian hostel (55.8% of 179 approached)

## What they did

Cross-sectional survey of 179 medical students in an Indian hostel. 100 (55.8%) returned questionnaires. They reported on lifestyle and answered screening questions for PMDD using DSM-IV criteria.

## What they found

37% of respondents had PMDD, more common in older and postgraduate students. PMDD was significantly associated with sleep, physical activity, tea/coffee intake, and changes in eating habits during stress. Most common physical symptom was body ache or joint pain. Most common psychological symptom was feeling depressed or blue.

## What it means for you

PMDD is fairly common among Indian medical students. Lifestyle changes like better sleep and less caffeine may help manage it. The study was small (100 responses) and from one location, so results may not apply to all women.
