# How common is PMS in young women and is it related to family history?

About 4 in 10 young college women have PMS. Having a mother with menstrual problems does not increase your risk, which suggests family history may be protective.

 Moderate study design

250 female college students aged 18-25 in Ujjain, India

## What they did

Observational study at 4 colleges in Ujjain, India. 250 girls aged 18-25 tracked their symptoms for at least 2 consecutive menstrual cycles using a daily symptom record. PMS was diagnosed using clinical criteria (ACOG).

## What they found

PMS prevalence was 39.6%. PMS was less common in women whose mothers had no history of menstrual problems.

## What it means for you

PMS affects about 4 in 10 young women in this population. The study suggests maternal menstrual health may be protective, though the reason is unclear. Results apply to Indian college students and may differ elsewhere.
