# Does PMS affect sleep quality in female medical students?

The study found no overall statistical relationship between PMS severity and sleep quality, though all students with moderate to severe PMS had poor sleep while 61.7% with mild or no PMS also had poor sleep. The unclear pattern suggests the relationship is more complex.

 Early or limited evidence

65 female medical students in Surabaya, Indonesia

## What they did

A cross-sectional study of 65 female medical students. Researchers used the SPAF questionnaire to measure PMS and the PSQI questionnaire to measure sleep quality, then analyzed results with Fisher Exact Test.

## What they found

Students with mild or no PMS had good sleep quality 38.3% of the time and poor sleep quality 61.7% of the time. All students (100%) with moderate to severe PMS had poor sleep quality. Statistical testing showed p = 0.103, indicating no statistically significant relationship.

## What it means for you

Although students with severe PMS all had poor sleep, the overall study did not find a statistically significant connection. Sleep is affected by many factors beyond PMS. The study was small with only one university in Indonesia.
