# Do girls with type 1 diabetes experience different PMS than other girls?

No clear difference. Most girls with type 1 diabetes (71.4%) experience no to mild PMS symptoms, regardless of how well their diabetes is controlled.

 Early or limited evidence

21 girls with type 1 diabetes in Bandung, Indonesia

## What they did

Researchers followed 21 girls with type 1 diabetes from August to November 2019 at a hospital in Bandung, Indonesia. Participants completed a PMS questionnaire. Researchers compared PMS scores to how well controlled their diabetes was using HbA1c levels.

## What they found

15 girls (71.4%) experienced no to mild PMS, and 6 girls (28.6%) experienced moderate to severe PMS. No significant correlation between PMS severity and HbA1c level (r=-0.174, p>0.05).

## What it means for you

Having type 1 diabetes does not appear to worsen PMS, even if diabetes is not well-controlled. This is a very small study at one hospital, so results may not apply to all girls with diabetes.
