# How many university students have PMS and what do they know about it?

53.6% of students reported experiencing PMS. More than half had good knowledge and positive attitudes about PMS. 70.3% said PMS disrupted their normal routine.

 Early or limited evidence

222 female nursing students from a nursing college in Iraq (mean age 20.77 years)

## What they did

Cross-sectional survey of 222 female nursing students in Iraq. Students completed a questionnaire about PMS symptoms using standard criteria, their knowledge about PMS, and how PMS affects their daily life and academic performance.

## What they found

53.6% of students reported experiencing PMS, and 34.7% said they did not. 52.3% had good knowledge scores and positive attitudes toward PMS. 70.3% reported that PMS disrupts their normal routine. The most common self-management strategies were getting plenty of sleep (75.2%), drinking hot drinks (72.1%), and using hot packs (59.5%).

## What it means for you

More than half of the nursing students surveyed experienced PMS symptoms, and most reported it affected their daily activities. While many had good knowledge about PMS, their lived experience and knowledge might differ. The findings are from one nursing college in Iraq and may not represent all students.
